As prominent children’s author Phillip Pullman notes, “Children need art and stories and poems and music as much as they need love and food and fresh air and play”. This is what drives The Young Company, Cairns award-winning and nationally-recognised professional youth theatre company.
What do Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Orlando Bloom, Rebel Wilson, Daniel Craig all have in common? They all participated in youth theatre companies from a young age.
Youth Theatre, by definition, is where children and young people come together outside of the school environment to train in performing arts related activities, lead by experienced theatre professionals. It is rooted in the community and facilitates the creative interaction of children and young people aged three to 25.
Established in 2009 and run by a professional team of teachers and theatre practitioners, The Young Company creates exceptional theatre experiences that educate, engage, challenge and inspire children, young people and their communities.
They inspire generations to explore the wonder of their world and transform the way children and young people engage in and experience live theatre.
TYC showcase young talent at the end of each semester, during school holiday programs and during community events. They reinterpret classic and contemporary stories for our time and also commission brave and relevant new writing.
TYC is a not-for-profit organisation and a regional beacon of professional quality theatre for, with and by children and young people.
The Young Company aims to:
Help develop children’s confidence and self-esteem.
Encourage our youth community to participate in performance and creative processes.
Provide a social and fun atmosphere for our youth to make friends, push boundaries and build their personal identity.
Engage our community and regional Queensland in the power of theatre to enrich and transform the lives of children and young people.
Encourage young people to participate more fully in their communities
What Locals Have to Say:
“I absolutely love drama because I was having fun and learning at the same time and I got a chance to be quite loud. Mum would hate that at home”.
Cameron, Aged 11
“I enjoyed TYC in-school drama program and would wake up at 5am and get ready. I was that excited!”
Ethan, Aged 11
“Over the past 5 years we have watched our daughter grow, not only as a performer, but also in confidence, socially and emotionally. A large part of this has been due to The Young Company’s programs and fantastic teaching staff”.
Steven Moore & Amanda Glaspy
” I’m very proud that my son is engaged with TYC and would not hesitate to recommend them highly to other parents, groups and the wider community”.
