Pelvic floor muscle training, also known as Kegel exercises, is designed to strengthen our pelvic floor muscles. A strong pelvic floor is crucial in supporting our pelvic organs, allowing us to control our bowel and bladder, and promote higher sexual satisfaction.

Despite its importance, most women and men overlook these exercises.

Often, the barriers to consistent Kegel exercises are a lack of motivation, fatigue, and time constraints. However, mastering Kegel exercises is also not as easy as it sounds, as many do not understand the exercise, or are performing them incorrectly. It is therefore highly valuable to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist, as they are able to assess, recommend, and monitor the exercise process progression. This is similar to having a personal trainer at the gym.

Like the fitness industry, technology has been incorporated into pelvic floor muscle training to enhance performance. The EMSELLA Chair is FDA and TGA approved for the treatment of urinary incontinence. It uses HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electro-Magnetic) technology to deeply stimulate the entire pelvic floor. It bypasses the brains’ limitation to recruit 100 percent of the muscle fibres, contracting them at intensities not achievable during normal exercises. Each 28 minute session is equivalent to doing 11,200 Kegel exercises.

As it is completely non-invasive with no down time, and simply requires the patient sit on the chair, the EMSELLA Chair is often referred to as the ‘Kegel Throne’. The technology may be especially useful for people who have difficulty activating their pelvic floor muscles to effectively perform Kegel exercises. It is also suitable for those who find it challenging to make Kegel exercises a habit, or those who would just like to achieve the results in a shorter timeframe.

Scientific research shows that 95% of treated patients with urinary incontinence have reported significant improvement in their quality of life after a course of EMSELLA chair treatments. A stronger pelvic floor has a multitude of positive implications, including helping facilitate stronger orgasms. This is achieved through increased blood flow and intensity of contractions.
