This year try your hand at scarecrow making! Making your scarecrow is super straightforward, but the real fun begins when your little ones get to dress up their hay-filled character however they like!
Getting creative as a family can be a great bonding experience. Who doesn’t like getting their hands dirty and seeing a vision come to life?
For this year’s Cairns Show Scarecrow Competition, we are going to give you some tips and tricks to make your family’s scarecrow one talked about for years to come.
What you’ll need:
- 1 sturdy stick or bamboo cane, about 2m long
- 1 sturdy stick or bamboo cane, about 1m long
- Old clothes – shirt or jumper, trousers, hat
- Old pair of tights
- String
- Straw or leaves
To make the frame:
- Tightly tie the shorter stick 3/4 up the long stick to make a sturdy cross. This is the frame, stick into the ground to keep it upright.
To Make the head:
- Cut one leg from a tight or use an old pillowcase
- Stuff with straw to desired sized
- Use paint or markers to make any face you want!
- Try stylising your scarecrow with a funny hat or hay hair
Dress your scarecrow:
- Dress your frame with your chosen outfit
- Stuff your clothes with hay, using zip ties or rubber bands to close off the openings
- Add accessories and really make the scarecrow your own
