It’s holiday season all year round up here in Cairns, and what better way to holiday is there than to explore the beauty in our own backyard. So pack up and head off for some quality family time either camping or glamping it up together in a fancy caravan.

1. Kurrimine Beach
Kurrimine Beach Holiday Park offers a variety of entertainment options for kids young and old with their water park, huge pool, giant inflatables, jumping castle, giant chess, flying fox obstacle course, and playroom. They also have glass bottom kayaks and Surrey bikes, and all this is located just a short walk from the beach.
2. Malanda Falls
Located in the Atherton Tablelands, Malanda Falls Caravan Park is hidden away in the rainforest and is home to many native animal friends. The park has plenty of facilities to keep the family entertained including a camp kitchen, campfires, a petting zoo, BBQ facilities, walking tracks and private access to the Malanda Falls.
If you’re up for something a little different, consider camping out on this tropical island. Beachfront BBQs, modern shower blocks and covered eating areas are available at the camping sites, as well as the option to explore the scenic island.
4. Ellis Beach
Who doesn’t love camping on the beach? Located
just north of Cairns, camping at Ellis Beach lets you safely swim in stinger nets or watch the sunrise over the ocean (a wonderful view for those early morning wake ups!).
5. Lake Tinaroo
Lake Tinaroo is undoubtedly a favourite with Cairns locals. There are numerous campsites available all hugging the lake’s edge, including Platypus, Downfall Creek, Fong-on Bay, Kauri Creek and Curri Curri bush areas. Lake Tinaroo is popular with people of all ages, whether you want to light a campfire and watch the
sun setting over the lake or swim around in the cool water. The lake is also a popular area for anglers and water sports.
6. Etty Bay
It’s difficult not to be amazed by the crystal-clear waters of Etty Bay. Besides the camping site, the area also features a café, children’s playground and BBQ area. You can wake up to the beautiful view of the ocean, and if you’re lucky, you may even see the local cassowaries foraging for food.
7. Speewah
Fringed by tall trees, the Speewah camping grounds are perfect if you’re looking to escape into the tranquillity of the rainforest. Picnic tables, BBQ areas and walking tracks are situated nearby.
8. Lower Davies Creek
Camp in a peaceful area nestled between granite boulders and the clear, cooling waters of Davies Creek. Stunning features such as Davies Creek Falls and the Clohesy Fig Tree are close by, boasting stunning lookouts and picturesque sceneries.
9. Granite Gorge Nature Park
Up for an adventure? Hike the short or long trails winding through the area, make friends with colonies
of wallabies or splash around in Granite Creek’s refreshing waters. The campsite itself is peaceful and pet-friendly, so feel free to take your pup along on your next camping trip.
10. Your backyard
Here’s an idea – why not have a camp out in your own backyard? Pitch up a few tents, get everyone into their PJs, cook up a delicious BBQ dinner and sit around on blankets telling each other stories!
