Abdominal separation is normal during pregnancy.

The tummy muscles stretch and thin around the growing baby bump and part of the process is a separation of the muscles down the centre of the belly. It is called a diastasis of the rectus abdominus (6 pack) muscle, or DRAM for short. Part of the miraculous recovery of your baby body is for this separation to gradually close. While the activities of caring for a new baby kick start this process, specialised tummy exercises also help.

Very few mummies have an ongoing separation, those that do benefit from careful assessment and treatment by a physio with a special interest in this area.
