Parenthood is one of the most rewarding and important, yet difficult things you can do. The birth of a baby will bring about many changes and challenges in the lives of new parents. It does take time to adjust to these new roles.
Your unsettled infant
The period of PURPLE crying is a way to help parents understand this time in your baby’s life. PURPLE is an acronym for the common characteristics of this phase. All babies go through the period of PURPLE crying – some will cry a lot and some far less. It typically begins at about two weeks of age and continues until about three – four months of age. When babies are going through this period they seem to resist soothing (Dr Barr et al, 2009).
Peak of Crying – Baby may cry more each week, peaking in month two, then less in months three – five
Unexpected – Crying can come and go and you don’t know why
Resists Soothing – Your baby may not stop crying no matter what you try
Pain like face – Your crying baby may look like they are in pain, even when they are not
Long lasting – Crying can last as much as five hours a day or more
Evening – Your baby may cry more in the later afternoon or evening
If you are concerned about your baby’s crying and it doesn’t feel right see your GP, paediatrician or child health nurse.
